Blogging and school
I teach 7-12 Social studies at Put-in-Bay Schools. Blogging would be a great thing at my school because it would allow my students to reach a larger group of students. I have small classes of less then ten which has great advantages but one disadvantage is lack of contact with students their age. Although the meeting will be web based the students will be able to interact with students of their age of different schools. This will expose them to diversity and different opportunities. It would also be a great place to expose work for people to look at. The community could get involved and blog with the students. They can interact and do projects on the internet with community involvement. The learning can happen anytime. Learning can happen at the students convenience or other peoples. While we are sleeping on the island a person in Europe can be adding to the discussion. Blogging will allow me to attempt to overcome a weakness of my otherwise great school district.

Craig, this is such a great idea to incorporate students from all over. This is just another way to increase students' abilities to discuss their thoughts. When you talk to the same people day in and day out, the discussions can sometimes become lazy. When talking to a complete stranger, students will want to "show-off" their knowledge. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteHi Craig, I like the global community possibility that you can bring to the classroom. One item I would worry about is connecting with real students that can make age appropriate connections. Personally, I would try to connect with a school and then a specific teacher to begin interactions. That way you know the same goals are being sought. Some curriculums and teaching methods don't mix real well and I wouldn't like to start a project and then find that the other classes aren't following through.
ReplyDeleteCraig, it sounds like using blogs could really help your students become better at interacting with other kids their age. I second what Jean said about contacting a specific teacher if there is a certain project you want to collaborate on. Have you thought about using Skype for your kids to interact with other students around the world?
ReplyDeleteAshley, Jean, and Jennifer thank you all for your comments. I like you idea Jean and I did not think about that. Contacting a teacher in and starting there will help me out ensure it is age and grade level material. Thanks all!
